LIFE HISTORY.jpg (13660 bytes)

In Samvat 1455, on the fifteenth day in the month of Jyeshta, a beautiful child was found floating in the gentle waves of ganges at kasi by a mohammedan couple by name Damal and Jeejabivi.  They took the child home and brought it up with great affection and care.  The child, named Kabir, grew up as a lad with his mind turned always towards God.  Kabir wanted to be blessed by a sadguru and thought of Swami Raamananda but was doubtful whether Raamananda would bless him with upadaesa.  One day he hid himself by lying in the steps of Panchaganga Ghat where Swami Ramananda came daily for bathing in the early morning hours.  Swami Raamananda unware of a person lying on the steps, tread on Kabir.  Shocked by this the Swamiji cried aloud "Ram Ram".  Kabir stood and jumped in joy for having been blessed with Deeksha.  He had also adored a famous Sufi Fakir by name Shaik Taki and Sri Peer Pitambar as his preceptors.  He did not at all find caste as bar for devotion to god whether in be Allah or Rama.

He was a weaver by profession and Sri Rama had blessed him with his grace by giving him Darshan while Kabir was fulfilling his obligation.  He led a simple, unattached, devoted life in which his wife always stood by his side.  Kabir made himself happy by entertaining sadhus with that little he had.  Kabir was blessed with a son "Kamal" and daughter, "Kamali". Kamal like his father, was a great devotee.

Both of them had sung in praise of Sri Raama, Sri Krishna and Sri Vittal in simple poetry.  Though totally illiterate, Kabir poems are known for their lucidity, clarity of thought and practical wisdom.  He had always wished that everyone should realise the purpose of life and turn his attention to the Almighty.

In his old age, shunning fame and wealth, he left kasi and settled down at Maghar.  He died there at ripe age of 119.

Let us also sing and dance with him and get the benign grace of the Lord of Vaikunta.
