Sri Jayadeva, a great krishna Bhaktha was the court poet of Lakshmanasena, ruler of Bengal in the 12th century and by inference his life is fixed to belong to the 12th century. He was born at Kindubilva, a village near Puri, and his parents names are Sri Bhojadeva and Raamadevir. At the appropriate age he married padmaavathi, a beautiful and divine woman with great talents in music and dancing. Jayadeva and Padmaavathi led a life of total dedication to Lord Krishna, the Naamasankeertanam of these two purifying all the surroundings.
Jayadeva's profound devotion to Krishna created the urge in him to to celebrate the Leelas of the Lord in immortal verse. Evidently inspried by the Krishna Janma Khanda of the Brahmavaivarta Purna and the 9th Skanda of Daevibhaagavatam describing the leelas of Raadha & Krishna, Jayadeva composed Sri Geetha Govindam.
The Kavya, the only wellknown work of Jayadeva, possesses the characteristics of both drama and poetry, and is unique in Sanskrit Literature. It is a rare work which combines Sweetness, Sound and Sense in a very fine manner. The Slokas and Songs (Ashtapadis) are of ravishing beauty; they give incalculable warmth and joy while singing.
The Gita Govindam illustrates the power of Prema Bhakti as exemplified by the Lord's power to love deeply and tenderly. For the followers of the Bhaagavata Sampradaya in the South the Geetha Govinda Mahakaavya is like a Mahamantra possessing mysterious powers. The Geetha Govinda mahakaavya proves the limitless bliss one can enjoy by thinking of Raadhaa and Krishna, who personify Prema-Maadhurya Bhakthi.
